What is Anaconda? Why it so important?

Updated: Feb 26, 2023

Kas Kai Public?

Hope you are doing well!

Do you know the word ‘Amazon’ is no more about the amazon Jungle but it is about online shopping similarly in the data science world ‘Anaconda’ is no more about a snake but mmm...read the article to know what it’s all about!

Let’s get started..

According to Wikipedia Anaconda is "free and open-source distribution of the Python and R programming languages for scientific computing, that aims to simplify package management and deployment. The distribution includes data-science packages suitable for Windows, Linux, and macOS."

Too boring right...

Don't worry bantai, we will make it simple.

So let's take the example of an android mobile phone. Every phone has few basic inbuilt functions such as the camera to click a photo, gallery to view that photo, calculator for number crunching, music player to play music and so on...

Have you ever come across a situation when you bought a brand new phone and wanted to make a call but you could not because the dialer was not installed? How frustrating would it be, right? In order to avoid this, android phones have all these apps pre-installed on the phone to make the user’s life easy.

Python and R also require a few commonly used resources to perform basic tasks. So to make programmers’ life easy Anaconda comes with a set of pre-installed libraries and resources such as

  • Jupyter Notebook: a shareable notebook that combines live code, visualizations and text.

  • Visualization libraries like Bokeh, Datashader, matplotlib and Holoviews.

  • An open-source package and environment management system called Conda, which makes it easy to install/update packages and create/load environments.

  • Data science libraries like pandas and NumPy

  • Machine learning libraries like TensorFlow and scikit-learn

Hush .. easy, isn’t it? So now onwards whenever you hear ‘Anaconda’, think about data science, not a snake :p and yes another thing, to understand the meaning of words like packages and libraries please do login back in :p
