Howdy Shooters!
This blog is about clearing the clouds of confusion around the terms of Data Analysis and Data Analytics. As very often these terms are used interchangeably and misinterpreted, I thought let’s settle this for our public!
Here we go!!
I tried to retrieve the formal definitions for both terms from reliable sources but unfortunately, they created more confusion! The definition of Data Analysis in the first source is quoted as a definition for Data Analytics in another source. So I headed towards "Oxford Dictionary of Computing " and guess what these terms were conveniently missing from here ..ok, that was frustrating! Ultimately, I had to open my class notes... hush... I got it!
Data Analysis
The process of performing statistical and mathematical operations on data to draw inferences.
Data Analytics
This is the branch of data science that includes the collection, analysis and management of data.
So let's understand both terms using examples
Joe runs a supermarket. At the end of the month, he sums up the product-wise revenue generated by analyzing the data and understands which are the top-selling products.
Here, Joe has used data analytics to get the information of the top-selling product by documenting, organizing and analyzing the data of items sold within a month in his store.
So now you know the meaning and usage of these two confusing terms!
Phew.... hope this is settled for you now Baantai!
